Magic is all around us, and there are many who can still use it, we just do not know them. From all forms of magic, music is the strongest. In his dark castle ROGER, the magical death whistle/skeleton plans how to conquer the world through songs.
In Bucharest, SIMI, an orphan from a gypsy family that has to take care of his very ill little sister HELEN, dreams of becoming a famous musician, like his father. But he has to find ways to play with the scars on his hands the fire that killed his parents. In town there is an unusual musical instruments shop, run by ABI, the old Jew, who is also guardian of LYRA, the magic guitar/turtle in search of which are Roger’s minions - HERMAN, a former music teacher and PUKKU, the magical drum/dog. In the basement of a restaurant Simi has a strange meeting. He is asked to take an unusual looking object to ABI. He reluctantly accepts. Next day he hears for the first time the music of DJANGO REINHARDT and decide that he will abandon the violin and become a jazz manuche player. He leaves in search of Abi’s musical instruments shop to buy himself a guitar, and finds it with the help of BAS, the magical sistrum/cat. Abi take the unusual object, that looks similar to his own. He recommends Simi an odd looking guitar, but Simi refuses it. Unwilling to haggle with Abi for the price Simi runs away with the new and shiny guitar, abandoning in the shop the violin he received from his father. Thinking that the guitar Simi stolen is Lyra, Herman arranges that Simi gets arrested by the police. Abi comes and rescues him from the prison, gives him Lyra and the unusual objects and urges him to go to Paris. Hoping to meet his idol, the jazz player Django Reinhardt, and after Abi promises that will take care of his sister, Simi reluctantly accepts.
On the way to Paris, Simi and Lyra narrowly escape their pursuers. First they run away with the Orient Express train, where the magical guitar face in musical duel the drum. Next time they escape through the Unicorn’s cave, a mysterious place where Simi find another object. Then they meet a fairy queen from which Simi ran away with yet another similar object with the help of Bas. Their last adventure starts when they meet TZAR, a magical elephant/flute and his companions, a caravan of magic instruments/animals disguised as a circus. The circus is run by GRIGORI and his brothers, and Simi and Lyra travel with them next to Paris. There they split, but not before Grigori gives Simi another unusual-looking object. At the edge of Paris they will meet ANTA, MODRON’s niece. Modron is another guardian, and she has bad news: Roger’s minions kidnapped Helen, and Abi let himself captured in order to be able to take care of her.
Modron gives Simi another unusual-looking object and tells him that the only chance to enter the Death Whistle castle is from the magical Labyrinth that connects all sacred places on Earth. But first they must find the TWINS, who have answers for all their questions. In the middle of the discussion they are found by Herman and Pukku. Modron tries to fight against them in order to give Simi, Lyra and Anta time to run away. The three find the entrance into the Labyrinth, and pass the tests required to reach the Twins, without knowing that Pukku is following them. The Twins will teach them more about music magic and disclose that all the unusual-looking object are parts of Lyra’s True Name. The one who has the True Name of a magical instrument can control it, and this is the way the Death Whistle is controlling his minions. Simi puts together a plan to save Helen and Abi and so they leave to the mysterious castle. Once in the Death Whistle castle our heroes succeed not only in liberating the prisoners but in freeing Pukku from Roger’s control. Lyra sacrifices herself allowing them to escape. Back in Paris our heroes succeed in defeating the Death Whistle and Herman Otto after a spectacular chase on the streets. In gratitude for being liberated Pukku grants Simi his most ardent wish: Helen is cured.
In the end Simi meets his idol, the famous jazz singer DJANGO and becomes a member of his band. Movie ends with the jazz concert at which almost all character we met during the movie assists.
